Description

Hello -
I posted this as a question over on the WP MU forums, and "andrea_r" responded that it was apparently a bug and I should report it here. You might want to check out my original post over there.

Essentially, I just set up WP 3.0 RC1 on a new site I've been working on. I wanted users to be able to self-register their own blogs in a blog network, with each blog having its own subdomain.

When I was testing that functionality, I found that WP was automatically adding "www" to the subdomain URLs, despite being configured that it shouldn't. For example, I would go through the process of registering a new blog, and up to the very end, it would display the URL as http://test.example.com. But then, when I finalized the blog creation, in the e-mail sent to the user and in other places, WP would show the URL as http://test.www.example.com.

You can try it for yourself here:
http://www.stcroix360.org/wp-signup.php

Feel free to register a blog if you'd like.

I've configured my web host to work with wildcard DNS entries, and I've also set it up to recognize the main-level domain with both the www and not.

I'm afraid I don't know what additional details might be useful, but please feel free to ask follow-up questions, I'll keep an eye on this ticket.

Thanks!
Greg (first-time bug reporter)

  • Keywords reporter-feedback added; url removed

I think this is fixed with [15050].
Can you download the ZIP file, replace it with the old files and check it again?

I just downloaded the ZIP file above and updated the files. Everything seems to be working great! Registrations are working, no more www, etc.

I noticed one very small thing while testing: When I clicked the activation link in the e-mail that was sent to me after I signed up, the title of that page it took me too was "Not Found," though everything worked fine and the page content included the confirmation message, etc.

I'm also still having one other small problem, which may or may not be related, and may or may not even be a WP issue. Whenever I try to access http://stcroix360.org (no 'www'), I get this error message:

The page isn't redirecting properly
Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete.

When I include the 'www', everything works fine. I have set-up my host (Dreamhost PS) to allow the domain to work either with or without the 'www.'

I wish I could fix this myself, but don't have the foggiest idea how. I'm not sure if I should reopen this ticket or what to move the process along, sorry!

Thanks again for making WP great!

Update: The second error, regarding the site not working without the 'www' is not a WordPress problem, please disregard. It was indeed a hosting issue.

The only remaining issue is the "Not Found" title on the signup confirmation page.
