Unbalanced quotes break RTE structure

Turn off RTE (WYSIWYG editor), then start a new post. Enter the following into the textarea the example below:

test post
<img src="/foo.jpg>

Now turn on VRE and retrun to editing the post.

In Firefox, bits of the RTE end up in the post edit box, including the markup for the Save/Publish buttons. This makes it impossible to correct the entry while VRE is enabled. When editing old posts that are not valid (X)HTML, this can become a serious and recurrent issue.
