"high-aspect"?

WordPress crops the thumbnails it displays, as you know. If a thumbnail is far wider than it is high, it errs on the side of caution and tries to show more of the image. There's no bug here. We could opt to improve thumbnail displaying in the future, but it is not happening in 3.5.

Shorter bug report: ridiculously wide images look ridiculously wide.

This is expected behavior. The image is being scaled to fit the box, not cropped.

Edit: Never mind. See below.

When you upload an image, it goes through the normal process of having sized thumbnails created based on your media settings.

The modal takes the "medium" thumbnail and crops it in the view box which is ~125x125px give or take. The cropped version of that thumbnail is what you see.

This is expected behavior.

Discussion with Drew helps at least explain what is happening in the screen shot. The crops are not based on "random" sizes, but they are also not based on the size of the image being represented. It is just showing the Medium resized image at 100% zoom for high-aspect images (of any size) while showing the Medium size image at 50% zoom in most other cases.

The result is that a 300x50 icon and a 900x150 photograph will both show up as narrow middle-crops of what should be a much larger picture. The 900x150 photo could easily fill the box, or could easily be resized to fit. As the intention is to not do those things, I guess there's nothing else to add here.

Thank you for considering it.
