explicit memory check before starting install

When installing wordpress on a vanilla 64 bit Debian Sarge LAMP system, I bumped into the default 8M php memory limit. No feedback at all, just the install.php page that refused to load. I had to fiddle with executing it on the command line and seeing it run out of memory to see wat the problem was.
An installer script with a builtin php memory check would be nice. That would save quite a bit of hassle.
