Why should this be in core? I think the plugin is pretty well on it's own, whoever needs that, can plug it in. +1 for having this in the plugin domain. Otherwise there are tons of other ideas on how/when/what to size/crop/thumbnail picture within the ui.

This can probably be closed as a dupe of #15311 which has recent discussion. See also #8599.

Also worth noting that the BetterThumbs plugin is no longer maintained.

This plugin is no longer active. The newer versions of WordPress handle thumbnails in a more elegant manor, so there is not much need for this plugin anymore.
