Description

When I try to edit the permalink of a posting by clicking on 'edit', changing the permalink, and then clicking on 'save' it appears the permalink is changed. However, if I click on 'posts' in the left menu to refresh, the posting has its old/original permalink back...

  • Component changed from Permalinks to UI
  • Milestone changed from Unassigned to 2.9
  • Owner ryan deleted
  • Summary changed from Unable to change the permalink of a posting... to Save button of permalink editor is confusing.

And then, you also need to update the post. The save button is extremely misleading.

Keeping this open, because it's a confusing UI bug.

Suggested UI change:

  • remove the edit/save crap, replace with a small text input
  • if postname is left empty, leave it blank
  • if postname is filled in, keep it
  • add a generate button to fill it in automatically
  • remove the postname editor, which is redundant

  • Priority changed from normal to low
  • Severity changed from normal to minor
  • Type changed from defect (bug) to enhancement

This isn't really a "bug"... bugs mean something isn't working and is broken. A label that could be clearer should always be considered an "enhancement" for the purpose of tickets.

The Save is dependent on Saving the post again. I kind of think there shouldn't even need to be a Save by the permalink, since saving the post should trigger the field change in the db.

Replying to Denis-de-Bernardy:

And then, you also need to update the post. The save button is extremely misleading.

Replaced the button to "OK" to match the Post Status and Post Date setting.

The current UI matches the settings UI in the Publish postbox. What you're proposing is to drop the show/hide and expose the internals. Don't really see that as an enhancement as most users never modify the permalink/postname.

I do like the "ok" better than the "save" button. I will sometimes modify the permalink but have never found the current way of doing so confusing. The new button does look cleaner though.
