1st item added to menu becomes custom item

When you create the first custom menu and add the first item to it, it gets added as a custom type item even though you're adding a post or page.

Steps to reproduce:
Multi-site set up (haven't tried this with single site)
Delete all existing menus
Create a new menu
Click "view all" on posts or pages widget
Select a page or post and click button to add to menu
New custom menu item is added to menu instead of post or page.

If we go with the behavior of keeping original object properties, this may be taken care of in that anyways.
