Ticket #16020, comment 43
initial v1 1 I've been actively maintaining the plugin since I released it, about 2 years ago. I still think a solution should be considered for core. It was suggested by many and it's a pretty requested feature. I don't say that's the only way to do it; there are also a few other great plugins: [https://wordpress.org/plugins/simple-local-avatars/ Simple Local Avatars], [https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-user-avatar/ WP User Avatar] and [https://wordpress.org/plugins/add-local-avatar/ Add Local Avatar], alt ough some of them may be a bit too much for core. Just to be clear, the proposed solution doesn't remove Gravatar support or break backward compatibility.1 I've been actively maintaining the plugin since I released it, about 2 years ago. Less than a month later, Stack Exchange [http://blog.stackexchange.com/2013/01/announcing-a-new-way-to-change-your-profile-picture/ announced a new way to change profile pictures] for the entire network (including Stack Overflow). So anyone who wants to use a custom picture is able to simply upload one or to switch back to their Gravatar. Last year, GitHub did the same [https://github.com/blog/1803-switch-your-picture-with-ease announcing that switching profile pictures just got easier].
