#16491 closed feature request (wontfix)

Automatically backup database before updating

Description

Currently when updating Wordpress or its plugins/themes there's a message at the top of the page, reading that the user should backup its database.

This "update tool" would be so much more useful, if it could backup the database automatically before updating. I'm not so sure why one would need to backup the files so this step could most likely be skipped.

Many backup plug-ins are available try and use them for the time being.

It seems like a good idea.

Very large MultiSite setups are unlikely to use the automatic upgrade feature anyway, so we don't need to worry about them.

This is plugin material. An entire ecosystem exists around providing a way for users to do backups.
