Domain mapped sites unnecessarly redirect via HTTPS when switching to admin interface. Details and confirmation from another community member at the link above.

PS Multisite is great and has made WP a viable enterprise solution. I currently use the system at the University of Auckland.

This sounds like a plugin issue, not a core issue. We don't support domain mapping in core.

Mark posted the filter the plugin should use in the thread.
