#19075 closed enhancement (wontfix)

Revert Howdy [user] menu back to click-to-open (like the Help menu)

Description

I know a lot of people are all on-board for the new flyout and hover menu functionality, but one behavior change I cannot seem to adjust is clicking the Howdy menu to activate the dropdown + logout.

I promise, I DON'T want to edit my profile, I just want the menu to drop down. I don't think this is related to the hover delay, it's that I'm used to clicking the thing and can't stop doing it.

  • Resolution set to wontfix
  • Status changed from new to closed
  • Type changed from defect (bug) to enhancement

It takes a little while for muscle memory to develop and overcome the old habit. Personally I also liked the click to open style we set back in 2008, but the people have spoken and on hover is the name of the game these days. Speed trumps habit. Closing as wontfix, but I'm sure you'll develop the new habit soon -- and your wrists will thank you, since fewer clicks means lower risk of RSI! ;)

The second part I tend to agree with, but hover does not seem to be standard practice for a top-right profile button w/ a dropdown.

The button tends to be hyperlinked to the profile (perhaps for for no-JS reasons) but the click will then open the tab, rather than visit the link

This is consistent on Twitter.com, Facebook, and, especially, Google/Google+.

Both Twitter and Facebook have left-side action menus that require clicks to open as well (Messages, Requests, Retweets, etc.)

I find the behavior in core to be pretty jarring. Click-to-open was also how the Howdy menu in 3.2.

Was this user tested at all? I thought I recalled it was, but I don't see anything in the write-up on wpdevel.

Yep. And I use all of those sites on a daily basis. It's hard to remember that WordPress is the only one not using the click event.

I'd be curious to hear this too.
