    66I'm pretty reasonable, and would just like to have a user friendly and supported way to make it work as before, without a core code hack.

     8BTW: I did change the default from search to wpsearch, and restored the order of the rewrites to the current/original 3.3.1, and that by itself cleared up the issue, at least for me.
