Description
Wordpress requires cookies for users to log in. This is problematic
since EU privacy regulations requires that a website states why
cookies are being used and lets them opt out.
"Where such devices, for instance cookies, are intended for a
legitimate purpose, such as to facilitate the provision of
information society services, their use should be allowed on
condition that users are provided with clear and precise information
in accordance with Directive 95/46/EC about the purposes of cookies
or similar devices so as to ensure that users are made aware of
information being placed on the terminal equipment they are using."
(from
EU Directive 2002/58/EC)
Having to write or modify a privacy policy is annoying and in many
organisations may involve large amounts of bureaucracy. It would be
desirable to avoid this where possible.
Additionally, some more privacy conscious users may have cookies
turned off but should still be able to use Wordpress. In some cases
the user may be unable to turn cookies back on, due to this policy
being enforced by their machine system administrator or via an
external HTTP proxy.
This is a request that Wordpress work properly and allow logins when cookies are
disabled. The request that Wordpress displays and appropriate error
message when cookies are disabled is made in #2039.

I don't see this happening. Cookies work, and are the most compatible method. +1 on the error message for disabled cookies though.
