Description

Add feature pointers to 3.5. In an IRC conversation that still needs to be summarized, two pointers were proposed:

  • Media (obviously). If appropriate, a pointer inside the dialog as well.
  • Plugin favorites

Initial patch adds two pointers.

Solid first pass. We might want to iterate on the media pointer's copy.

Looks at the logs, other pointer suggestions were:

  • Possible internal media pointer
  • Attachment editing UI

Another that just occurred to me might be Settings > Reading for the Privacy option that was moved.

Made some copy tweaks in 22454.2.diff (feel free to take em or leave em):

For pointer_wp350_media()

FROM: Working with images and other files has never been easier.

TO: Uploading and inserting images and other files has never been easier.

For pointer_wp350_favorites()

FROM: If you have logged into WordPress.org and favorited plugins there, you can now install them directly from this tab.

TO: Now you can install any plugins you have favorited on WordPress.org directly from this tab.

I like the 'Uploading and inserting' change. But what about something like this for favorites:

FROM: If you have logged into WordPress.org and favorited plugins there, you can now install them directly from this tab.

TO: If you have favorited plugins on WordPress.org, you can now install them directly from this tab.

In 22815:

Two initial feature pointers for WordPress 3.5: plugin favorites and the media dialog. One offered for translation. props nacin, lessbloat, DrewAPicture. see #22454.

I kept the media strings in [22815] from being translated pending further review and consideration. Thanks for improving on my placeholder, but please note it was just a placeholder. :-)

Looked at this a bit more. I am going to kill the favorites pointer.

As mentioned on #22455, plugin favorites is a fairly hidden/buried feature. If we do a cycle that enables you to connect your WordPress.org account and suddenly review, rate, and favorite plugins from your dashboard, then it's a huge feature. Until then, the vast majority of users with only one site probably already have their "favorite" plugins installed, if they even have favorites.

Talking with Jane, we also came up with this text for the media pointer:
"New Media Manager"
"Uploading files and creating image galleries has a whole new look. Check it out!"

  • Owner set to nacin
  • Resolution set to fixed
  • Status changed from new to closed

In 22874:

Feature pointers:

  • Finalize the text for the media pointer. Offer it for translation.
  • Remove the favorites pointer.

fixes #22454.
