Twenty Thirteen: In post archive, the date of a post links to the actual post

Description

In Twenty Thirteen's entry meta, the date of the post is output as a hyperlink to the actual post. This is a bit misleading as far as UX goes - if I click on a date, I would expect to see the archive for that date, not the post. I would click on the title of the post for this.

Hi ericlewis, this is a standard convention in place with many, many WordPress themes including the last 3 default themes.

The UX is also important for posts without a title, in which case the date serves as the permalink and entry point to view the post.

I don't agree that clicking a post's date link would head to a date archive, that isn't a navigation pattern I've seen or used in the past with WordPress themes.

I agree with the bug report, that it's kind of a strange UI convention. But as Lance points out, many themes do this (none that I write though :-), including the last several default themes.

My vote would be "won't fix." This behavior is easy enough to change in a child theme (or even modifying Twenty Thirteen on your own WP install) if it's really bothersome to the site builder.

Replying to lancewillett:

That makes sense. Part of my surprise is the clock iconography. I've seen themes which use a permalink icon to link to the post. Maybe that would fit better here to tip the user off that it's a link to the post?

  • Keywords close added

Twenty Thirteen uses the link icon for posts with the Link post format.

To me the clock makes sense since it precedes the time when the post was published. To tip the user off that it's a link to the post, we have a descriptive title: "Permalink to Post Title".
