The list we allow in multisite seems arbitrary. Why mp4 but not m4v, or ogv, etc? I think it would be good to come up with some kind of policy, standard, rhyme, or reason for what this list should consist of, now and in the future.

I wonder if there's data available from WordPress.com on what upload types are most commonly used when enabled or from the support forums on what types are often assumed to be there.

  • Milestone changed from 3.7 to Future Release

This is what is enabled on WordPress.com: jpg, jpeg, png, gif, pdf, doc, ppt, odt, pptx, docx, pps, ppsx, xls, xlsx, key. With the space upgrade: mp3, m4a, wav, ogg. Don't know what is specifically whitelisted for video when you buy the Video upgrade.

I'm fine with making a change here but let's be smart about it. Moving this to future until there is a consensus.

Don't know what is specifically whitelisted for video when you buy the Video upgrade.

With the WordPress.com VideoPress upgrade: ogv, mp4, m4v, mov, wmv, avi, mpg, 3gp, 3g2
