#24579 new enhancement

Add Drag'n'Drop UI to plugin and theme manual uploaders

Description (last modified by ocean90)

We have this nice looking easy to use drag-n-drop UI for our media, is there anything stopping us from having it for our plugin and theme uploaders? I know most people use the search that goes through the .org repo, but it's foolish to think that's the only place people ever get their products. This would help facilitate a consistent user experience throughout the entire WP Admin.

Edit:
If possible, support multiple uploads too.

This would require UI change, so I started to try some stuff and got something like the following video;

Any thoughts on this idea?

Honestly, this looks like it got taken care of pretty well with the already done Plugin page revamp from 4.0

At least notably better than what it used to be.

I saw that, when I was in a Hangout with some friends, someone pointed that it doesn't implement the Drag and Drop nor multiple plugins/themes, correct?

Hadn't tested that part, so valid point there.

Users can drag and drop one plugin/theme currently, but multiple plugins/themes would be much more efficient.

This seems like a good idea. If a patch can be ready in the next few weeks, I would like to include it in 4.3. A v1 that people can start testing is much better than waiting for something to be perfect.

I like the way how it works and displayed. The only concern I have is about the labels for the bulk action.

The label "move to plugins" makes no sense to me, because, if you upload unter plugins - upload, the user is already in the plugin section and expect, that the plugin files will be uploaded in the plugin-section.

"Move and activate": I would suggest just to label it "activate"

"Delete files": maybe just "Delete"? Because thats also the label for the bulk action to change the installed plugins and it would be more consistent and maybe less confusing for non experienced users.

This was done in 5.5 right? Can this be closed now?

@gmariani405 Whom are you asking? If you visit /wp-admin/plugin-install.php do you find the same drag/drop uploader as seen in the media centre there?

This was not done in 5.5. it's still an open ticket.

Updating priority back to normal as the goals of 4.9 are different than the goals of today.

Yep, tend to agree. Drag and drop was very "fashionable" some years ago, not so much now as it doesn't work on touch screens (phones, tablets) and is generally pretty hard to do on a laptop/without a mouse. Also not good for accessibility.

In addition zipped plugins and themes are rarely installed or upgraded manually, not sure if it's warranted to add a whole new UI component (drop zone, etc.) to these screens.

Suggesting to close.

  • Keywords close removed

I think the UX of drag and drop can still be beneficial. Even though there are plenty of ways it falls flat (namely, anyone not using a mouse or mouse-like interface), for mouse users (and some touch interfaces), it is a natural experience and one that is supported in other parts of core, so I don't think this should be closed. Though I also don't think it's very high priority.
