Allow entry and display of authors and commenters ORCID IDs

An ORCID identifier [1] is like an ISBN or DOI for a researcher, or other author. WordPress should allow authors and commenters to enter their ORCID IDs in their profiles/ comments, and should display them, as a link to the subject's profile on the ORCID website [2], alongside their name. ORCID is an open project, run by a not-for-profit foundation.

Hi pigsonthewing, thanks for the suggestion, however this definitely seems like plugin material. Perhaps adding some meta fields to the user profile field.

In searching the ​Plugin repository, it seems like there's only one plugin in there that has anything to do with ORCiD, and in that case it seems like it's setup to display information from orcid.org database. So it seems like you've found a under-served niche.
