Could we come up with a more subtle active icon?

It would also be nice if the toolbar was fully obscured, instead of this odd fade-out business.

I'm not sure what you mean... It just has a border around it which is standard for active buttons in WP. Not sure if you can get any more subtle.

Fading it to grey is difficult as you'd need to adjust the editor's toolbar position and that would be worse as it's extra movement (moving the whole thing up 32px). This has been discussed before.

Can't it get some non-transparent grey overlay, without moving anything?

I think we considered that. Even then, there were some other reasons not do do it. Would have to dig a bit through conversations to find these. I think another one was that the admin bar is a good point of reference for the user (available anywhere in the admin). Leaving it there might make them less confused. But this was when we were considering enabling this by default. :)
Also, since the menu slides, it would make sense for the bar to slide too, instead of changing the color from blackish to whitish.

Maybe worth discussing again, in a separate ticket. It could look "cleaner" with the black bar gone, but not sure if it makes a huge difference.

Note: See TracTickets for help on using tickets.
