Description
Short intro
Sketchfab is a platform for publishing and sharing interactive 3D models on the web. Our player is fully HTML5 and WebGL based and requires no plugins. The service is free to use, we ask professionals to purchase a membership.
Here's an overview of popular content:

Is the service is popular enough for core developers to have heard of it before? Is it “mainstream?”
While I can't vouch for that, Sketchfab embeds are rapidly becoming more popular among news sites, social networks and all sorts of community sites.
After a long process, Facebook accepted Sketchfab as the only interactive 3D format on their platform. This included a thorough security scan:

Here's a (non-exhaustive) list of websites and forums that already support Sketchfab:

https://help.sketchfab.com/hc/en-us/articles/202604563-Embed-in-Forums
If similar services are already supported, how does this service compare in terms of size, features, and backing?
I think WordPress is not supporting any interactive 3D content at this time.
Does this service have a large following on Twitter, Facebook, or other social media? Is its Twitter account verified?
- http://twitter.com/sketchfab - not verified yet
- https://www.facebook.com/Sketchfab
Is its oEmbed endpoint clearly established and properly documented? Sometimes, they are just a developer’s pet project that may not be supported.)
Yes, our oEmbed endpoint is an essential part of our business.

Does the service make an effort to build relationships with developers, such as through robust APIs?
Yes, very much. We're quite responsive to API requests and partnerships.
Here's our full API documentation: https://sketchfab.com/developers
How old is the service?
Sketchfab is three years old, and have a team of 15 people working from Paris and New York. We're backed by venture capital from Balderton Capital, Borealis Ventures and others.
Does it have a well-established Wikipedia article? (Seriously.)

Has anyone written a WordPress plugin that leverages the service in some way, whether adding it as an oEmbed provider, creating a shortcode, or leveraging other APIs of the service? Do these plugins have any noticeable adoption or traction that would indicate usage and demand?
- Our own plugin: https://wordpress.org/plugins/sketchfab-viewer/
- Community contributed: https://wordpress.org/plugins/sketchfab-oembed/
Is the provider frequently proposed?
Hope so :)
Hi bartv42,
Thank you very much for pre-emptively going through our oEmbed provider checklist and answering its questions. It's much appreciated.
At this time, it looks to me like Sketchfab isn't popular enough to be considered a mainstream provider, based on the number of active Sketchfab plugin installs, number of Twitter followers, userbase numbers from Wikipedia, number of Google search results, age of the service, etc. While none of these metrics on their own are a concrete indication of popularity, combined they paint a good picture.
With that in mind, I don't think Sketchfab is established enough to be added to WordPress as an integrated oEmbed provider. I'm going to close this ticket as
maybelater
as we do with requests for oEmbed provider integration that don't meet the criteria.
