Description

The current embed system in WordPress allows for embeds from specific websites. But what if putting a URL on its own line in the post editor not wrapped as a link would generate a link preview the same way it would, for example, in Facebook or Google+?

Extracting a featured image and other basic information is already part of the revamped Press This, for example. It could store this in the same location as the embed code.

Related yes, but I wouldn't suggest making WordPress an oembed provider.

Even if you don't want it to be an oEmbed provider, you need the embed handler, which #32522 would tackle as well
