Automatic expiry of plugin notifications

Description

I would like plugin generated notifications to expire so that they're automatically removed after a certain number of days.

Half a dozen notifications greeted me when given access to a site recently, all of which required action to clear.

I feel the notification system is starting to get abused.

I would like to propose that notifications generated by plugins are automatically removed after a certain number of days (5 or 7 for example, but with the ability to change via a filter).

If not enabled by default, perhaps it could be enabled as a theme option or filter.

Hi,

That's not really a notification system, plugins and themes can hook into that section and output html, so it's up to them to do this in a sane manner.

Also, those notices are all dismissable. Are they constantly returning after being dismissed?

Thanks for your comments. Yep, they are dismissable, and no they didn't return, but when there's multiple updates over consecutive days, it does get a bit annoying having to dismiss them every day you login to your site (if you keep your site updated). Also, one of the plugins there will display the notification for every single admin user, so even after you dismiss it, every other admin will get the same notificaiton as well and also need to dismiss it. And as you can see in the screenshot, one of the notifications is simply used for advertising the developers others extensions.

It just seems that more and more plugins now are displaying these notifications after every update so it would be great if there was a way to have them cleared automatically. If you're simply updating a plugin that you've been using for months or even years, you don't really need to be notified about where to find the documentation or settings page after every single update.

@johnbillion Thanks for posting that link. I like that idea. Will definitely be checking that out.
