Not adding support for custom backgrounds was a design decision for the theme. The theme is about the different background colors for post formats that cover the entire width of the screen, there is really not a lot of room for a custom background which would probably not make for a good user experience.

Well, that's a bit sad: the reason I added this feature is because I have a friend using it, and I thought others might want it as well. Are you sure adding this would actually break the expected user experience, instead of just adding a new option/feature to it?
