Description

I found that users easily get lost in admin panels, I suggest to create a function and add a breadcrumb trail somewhere next to the Help and Screen Options tabs by default.

I like this idea and do think users would as well. I do think this sounds like a great plugin though (plugin territory). A search (albeit very quick) shows tons of breadcrumb plugins but not for the admin.

I think this should be in core by default so plugins and themes can benefit from it.

This would need some exploration in form of a plugin, including user tests.

I don't really see the benefit though at the moment. Admin pages aren't many levels deep, e.g. when I'm on the "Plugins -> Add New -> Upload" screen I can clearly see where I am in the admin menu.

I agree @swissspidy but users get lost when deeper because there is no other visual cue, plugins and themes are misusing the feature also, they do the same 2 level deep pages while sometimes must be deeper. Would be great to set some standard, provide the features to avoid cluttering the left menu, sometimes the pages are all scattered in the left menu, indeed a plugin/theme issue but we are lacking a standard maybe.

I agree that breadcrumbs are a good idea (if properly implemented), and help users (especially novice users) better understand the layout of the admin panel.

For what little it's worth, here's both a screenshot to how these look in Drupal 8, as well as a link to an article on how the Drupal community implemented them in Drupal 8. I realize that that a lot of details in the article won't apply to WordPress, but sometimes it's good to see things from a different perspective.

Discussed a bit in today's accessibility weekly meeting and agreed it's plugin territory. Also, no traction or patches in 8 months. It is something worth experimenting if and when a plugin/patch comes to light so please do feel free to reopen if that's the case, going to close as "maybe later" for now.
