Plugin updates not working from within WP-Admin

Description

As of WordPress 4.4 I am now unable to update plugins via the admin panel on any of my sites. When i try to do so i get this error ->
An error occurred while updating Store WP: Could not create directory. /wp-content/themes/store-wp/

Prior to 4.4 everything was fine.
