Live Responsive Previews in wpadminbar

If a user want to preview a new post (or any published post, page, archive etc) in tablet or phone size the user has to go through the Customizer. The function is sort of hidden and the user has to:

  • Click preview button / View current page
  • Click Customize in admin bar (if user has the privilege to use cutomizer)
  • Load the customizer
  • Click each device-icon.

My suggestion is to make the publishing workflow more convenient and faster by adding the newly introduced function "Live Responsive Previews" directly to the Admin bar.

There are a couple of longer-term goal areas that should facilitate this workflow better:

  • Making the customizer load inline on the front end
  • Introducing content authorship and editing directly in the customizer, potentially in a front-end-editing type of format that would natively support responsive previewing

There is also a lot of room to improve the post previewer, and it's been at least thrown around that it could work to make post previews happen in the customizer. I don't think there's a ticket for that so possibly we could use this for that, but it may be a maybelater since there are some dependencies first.

I agree with you, a better preview experience could be done. Now page has to load, the user has leave the normal flow etc. Can it be done in any other way? How do other things preview? Like a browser shows a preview before printing like a lazyload?

I don't see the point of being thrown into the customizer for just a preview, my gut feeling is that it distracts user more than beeing helpful.
Maybe it would be nice with some kind of combination of the adminbar and the customizer. Is there a need for both of them? Can a combined thing be done?

Enhancing the previewer seems like a good first step.

The preview button could have a dropdown for the specific devices to emulate.

  • Resolution set to maybelater
  • Status changed from new to closed

This should probably be closed. It's a cool idea, but is more "plugin territory," than a viable enhancement - at least for now.
