  • Type changed from defect to enhancement

Perhaps a wp-sitemap.php similar in fashion to wp-rss.php and the like.

You are aware that there is already a plugin to do this, though?

A wp-sitemap.php would be the right way to do it if it was to be added to the core.
However, if this is to be added to the core, then there also needs to be a way for Wordpress to "ping" Google on new/edited posts. This is done by making a GET request to httpwww.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps/ping?sitemap=url-encoded-url-of-the-sitemap-file. There would also have to be an option added to disable this functionality. Perhaps adding some additional capability to the "Update Services" is called for?

That's a job for plugins I'd say. There are some available.

Closing as WONTFIX for now. Currently plugin territory.
