Images not showing depending on the name

Description

Hello

After many hours strugling with the image ads I was trying to put into my posts, I found something:

If you upload an image that has spaces in the name (i.e. this pic.jpg) it is not going to show in the media library and neither in the post but if you try to open it directly you can see it is OK.
Also if you upload a picture with a name like banner-160x600.jpg it is not showing neither in the media library thumbnail nor the post.

I already deactivated all my plugins and changed the theme to the default, and I don't use any cache plugin. If I change the name of the picture to something like bann-test.jpg the it uploads and show like normal so I don't understand what is happening.

I am using es-MX language and of course latest public available version.

Greetings

This is the nature of http and you can not / should not have spaces in your file names that are meant to be used on the internet. Spaces are filled by %20% when requested in the browser but not in the file request.

Are you uploading the image via some plugin? Or directly to the media library?

I am doing it directly to the media library and yes I know, but it is supossed to be fixed by the platform like any other site (automatically change spaces for - or _) and I don't remember having this issue before (I have been using WP in different sites for some years now).

And like I said before, it will happen also if you put a name without spaces but using some numbers like img_160x160.jpg or .png

Hi @w3r3k3,

Thanks for the report, and welcome to Trac.

My first thought, is that maybe this is related to #37989, but in that case the images are still showing up in the library, and can be embedded into posts without a problem. It sound like you're saying the images are never added to the media library.

I'm not able to reproduce the exact issue as you've described. Can you summarize exactly what happens when you upload one of these files to the media library—are you seeing any error messages or anything, or does the file just not show up? Any additional info you could provide would be helpful.

The other question was, do you have any plugins or themes active on this install, and if so, which ones?

@w3r3k3 are you able to provide any more details for this? I am marking as a close candidate, pending no reporter feedback.
