Option for using SMTP instead of mail() as core feature

Description

Some hosting provider don't accept sending emails from php mail()-function so that you have to use smtp with authification instead. Unfortunatly there is no core feature doing this.
It would be great, if there would be an option on the install routine and in the settings for choosing send methode.
