Description

In Media Library there should be ad additional filter "Attached" like "Unattached". This should give the opportunity to filter out exactly what we need to display rather than looking through "Uploaded To" column for its status.

Hello @subrataemfluence ! Thanks so much for the work you did on this. We were recently reviewing this ticket in the #core-media weekly meeting as part of our triage of issues that are new without response.

We are trying to come to a conclusion on a use case for the attached filter and where this would be useful for users in the Media Library. Could you potentially illustrate when a user would need to use this feature?

Also, I'm noticing a 'trash' filter in the patch provided. Can you provide some context on that change as well? We might want to alter the description and title of this ticket to mention that being part of the patch.

Thanks again for helping WordPress!

@antpb Here is my observation in support of Attached filter.

It gives the ability to know which media files are actually "attached" to post(s). We already have "All" and "Unattached". There is so far no way to know which are attached. The objective is to filter out attached media files and list them just like Unattached. Say I have 200+ media files but out of those only 5 are attached to some posts. "Attached" filter will make it easier for users to know which 5 out of 200 are attached.

Regarding the Trash filter, I am a bit confused. Honestly, don't remember if I added it! It's almost two years I uploaded the patch for 4.7.3. The confusing part is if I hadn't added it how it came under the patch. I will have to look into 4.7.3 since I can see the trash code block is present in 5.0.2.

Yeah that's a great use case! We reviewed this in a recent Media bug scrub and it was agreed by attendees that there is no reason we should not consider this filter in the future. :D Marking 5.8 so we can discuss in future meeting to figure out the best path forward. The current page will need a refresh.

Thank you so much @antpb for considering my suggestion! :)

I possible, please let me know what refresh the patch requires so that I can make the changes and resubmit.

Regards

I have just upgraded to the latest nightly build (5.8) and looked into the media filter with super excitement! However, it is not there (yet). Please let me know if there is something not right which I need to correct.

I don't know, but perhaps I am not supposed to ask or follow up directly like this. Sorry if this has violated any regulation of WordPress!

I know this is a pretty old thread. However, I just would like to point out that this very features (Attached) filter is available with the plugin called "Media Library Assistant".

This means this particular enhancement does make sense and might well have been considered as an additional media filter in the WP core. Nevertheless, the core team might have thought otherwise!

I personally feel this could be a handy filter to have integrated with the core.

PS: I know that this is not the place to discuss any third party thing, but because the same feature is available with a third party plugin and the same could probably be considered for the WordPress core, I only wanted to mention it here.

Thank you!
