Description

It's been a sore spot for a number of contributing designers that the "Contributing Developers" (formerly "Rockstars") section is labeled "developers," when oftentimes there are more than just developers within that section.

There's a couple approaches we can take:

  • Change "Contributing Developers" to something like "Lead Contributors" or "Major Contributors"
  • Add a "Contributing Designers" section to specifically call out design contributions (though that doesn't help other non-designers getting hightlighted)
  • Find other ways to organize folks getting highlighted for their contributions entirely

The change need to be done on the api.wordpress.org side as well, since the string is returned by the API.

Cool, is that something you could do?

If there's a consensus, yes :) Credits API is updated right before the release, this should be done at the same time.

We could get 41022.diff in now for translators though.

The "Contributing Developers" verbiage was taken from the about page: https://wordpress.org/about/

(Tangentially, that page could use a comb through it also.)

I'm not really concerned about titular accuracy, so long as everyone feels adequately attributed & appreciated.

I'm hesitant to break apart designers from developers, without paying other equally deserving roles similarly fair treatment.

Philosophically, every contributor is helping develop the software, and is a software developer regardless of whether their contribution was code, pixels, or spirit.

If the phrase "Contributing Developers" has culturally shifted away from being all inclusive, we should try to pick a modern equivalent. If that's undesirable, eliminate the section entirely, and/or replace it with something more meaningful.

Is the goal to highlight everyone with core commit access? Across recent releases, or just the current one? Whatever the criteria is should help guide the descriptor, IMO. If others want their name up in that section, a proper description tells them how to achieve it.

I think that's the issue — right now the list is a mix of both committers and what was formerly "recent rockstars." We could always split that back out?

Noteworthy Contributors

I do like this better than "Major Contributors."

I think "Major" might be easier to translate, though "Noteworthy" shouldn't be too hard either.

In 41998:

Credits: Update "Contributing Developers" to "Noteworthy Contributors."

"Developers" excludes the various major contributors in non-developer roles, so let's update this term to be more inclusive.

See #41022.
