#41620 closed task (blessed) (fixed)

"Install" is not a noun

Description

"Install" is a verb. The correct word to use when referring to an instance of WordPress is "installation".

WordPress uses the word "install" erroneously in several places. The upcoming patch addresses this, along with a few other misuses of the word.

I wouldn't mind another pair of eyes to look over this to make sure there aren't any mistakes.

What official source do we use for grammar, punctuation, etc? I think it's very common to use install in place of installation. I can't find any "official" dictionary that has it listed as a noun, but Wikitionary.com lists it as an informal noun. On the flip side, "official" dictionaries have "doh" defined by influence of the TV show The Simpsons, so its hard to take them seriously.

Having said that, I don't really care which version of the word is used, but I do think consistency is important. I'm still curious what sources we use to make these decisions though.

As o non native English speaker, this proposed change makes perfect sense.

I agree that this makes for better reading, even as a native English speaker. Using "install" in this way can sometimes be more confusing/ambiguous. Overall, "installation" is often clearer, and almost always just sounds better. At least that was my impression after scanning the patch.

FYI:

"Active installs: %s"
plugins/plugin-directory/widgets/class-meta.php:50

"%s active installs"
plugins/plugin-directory/class-template.php:157
themes/pub/wporg-plugins/template-parts/plugin.php:36

In 41289:

General: Improve terminology used when referring to installations of WordPress and its extensions.

"Install" is not a noun, and while it might be acceptable to use the verb as a noun, it is not correct. Using the correct
noun, "installation", increases clarity, especially for non-native English speakers.

This change fixes the usage in user-facing text and in developer documentation.

Not included, we may consider changing Install to Installation in readme.html, L.19.

Now:

<h2>Installation: Famous 5-minute install</h2>

and then there is Installing_WordPress#Famous_5-Minute_Install
