Visual & Text Tabs for Content Editor Not Showing in Internet Explorer

Description

I just updated our website to 4.9.2 yesterday (1/23/2018), but we were behind by a few so I don't know that it broke with this specific version but...

It seems that the Visual and Text tabs for the content editor are missing for all our users, myself included, in IE, but there is no issue whatsoever in Google Chrome. In addition to the tabs missing, the editor is defaulting to the text editor, so all the important people who update our website are unable to do so as they don't have a clue what HTML is!

I have instructed them to use Google Chrome in the meantime, however, as a company default, everyone uses Internet Explorer. I use Chrome, so it's not bothering me, but I am worried about the rest of our employees!

Help??

Hi @jrodier, which version of Internet Explorer are you using?

Hey @melchoyce - sorry, I should have been all over that! We are all using IE 11. As an interesting side-note, the tabs appear perfectly fine in Edge.

Hi @jrodier, I tested my WP4.9.2 site in IE11 and the tabs appeared fine. Perhaps it's related to a plugin or theme.

Darn...thank you for letting me know! I will have to disable plugins 1-by-1 and see if that fixes it. We have a custom theme, so I'm hoping that's not it!

@jrodier this sounds more like #42503 (IE11 is in compatibility mode). The good news is that the fix is coming out in a few days, in WP 4.9.3. In the meantime maybe see if you can change IE11 to "standard" mode and let us know if that fixes it.

Generally it would be good to switch to a modern browser if possible: Edge, Firefox, Chrome...

@azaozz - interesting! I know IE11 is in compatibility mode for most of our users, but it isn't for me. I just tried toggling on and off and nothing changed. I also tried disabling TinyMCE Advanced to see if that would change anything, but it did not.

I would LOVE to have everyone switch to Chrome, but it's almost impossible to get some of our users to use two browsers (some of our intranet sites are only compatible with IE -_-).

I'd be interested in seeing if 4.9.3 fixes this though...

Hm, that could be somewhat worrisome. Is there an easy way to see what is the user agent string IE11 sends?

@azaozz - looks like its...

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; WOW64; Trident/7.0; rv:11.0) like Gecko

Does that help?

That's the standard IE11 UA. It should also work now, without the above patch.

This will need more tests:

@azaozz I kid you not... our site just auto-updated to 4.9.3 and this is no longer an issue! I didn't update any plugins or anything, but I received a notification that 4.9.3 was installed, I checked, and both tabs are there! I guess this is all set...?

Is there anything you think I should try before we just close and move on?

Yep, that's how it is supposed to be... Pure magic :)

Well, there was an update to the editor enqueueing to fix it in IE11 compat mode. For a moment it sounded like we may have missed something but I'm glad to hear all is good now. Fixed with [42529].

Thanks for coming back and letting us know.
