Theme editor will not saved changes made on theme files

Description

The theme editor (Admin menu/Appreance/Editor) will not saved changes made on files such as functions.php, style.css etc. after clicking on the "Update File" button. Before the update to version 4.9.5 it was working fine.
Now I get the error message: Unable to communicate back with site to check for fatal errors, so the PHP change was reverted. You will need to upload your PHP file change by some other means, such as by using SFTP.

Hey there, welcome to Trac!

This is definitely not a core issue, seems like a server configuration issue (file permissions, etc.)

Please visit https://wordpress.org/support/forum/how-to-and-troubleshooting/ for help with debugging your issue.

Good luck!
