As per commonly understood English language definitions and French/English etymology:

sample = specimen/pattern

So I don't see a huge benefit renaming this after almost 15 years

Welcome to Trac @littlebizzy.

As @Presskopp said, the file has been called sample for many years and as it's only intended to serve as a basis to create an actual config file, it serves no other purpose after that so there's no need to change the name to something different. Once it's been used to create a config file, it can be deleted (although you'll need it back to regenerate a new config file of course).
