#4496 closed enhancement (worksforme)

Ping Server should allow entering IPs instead of domain names

Reported by: pampfelimetten Owned by:
Milestone: Priority: normal
Severity: normal Version: 2.2
Component: Administration Keywords: ping ip rpc
Focuses: Cc:

some webhosters (like mine) disabled the ability for apache to look up an url like rpc.pingomatic.com and translate it into an ip like if it would be cool, if it would be possible to enter directly IPs, so the pinging service also works on this configurations.

  • Component changed from Optimization to Administration
  • Milestone changed from 2.3 (trunk) to 2.4 (future)
  • Summary changed from possible to enter IPs instead of urls to Ping Server should allow entering IPs instead of domain names

What web host is that? Time to get a new web host?

a) You should be able to use IPs right now. All it's doing is connecting to the server given (using fsockopen) and sending the weblog.ping stuff.

b) Really, get a better host. A server that cannot do DNS lookups is not a server.

Otto just said exactly what I was going to say. :)

well, apart from that, its definitely the best hoster for us, because its free (they are only hosting cultural organizations like us) and we have something like 3 tb traffic per year, which would get expensive with other hosters. and we do enjoy many other great services =)

if its already working, great, but it didn't work last time I tried it. anyway, it would be great to have a "manual ping" option in the admin panel including a result, like they output on http://pingomatic.com/ when you do a manual ping ("Thanks for your ping")

Doesn't appear to be much of an issue and fixed according to Otto.
