Issues using v 5.0 on mobile device

Severity: normal Version: 5.0
Component: Editor Keywords:
Focuses: ui, administration Cc:

I am using an Android Samsung 8 phone.

Issues I've just encountered using the visual editor:

  • main editing tool bar sits at top of page, constantly scrolling up to add hyperlink, bold text, apply heading style
  • no un-do function
  • WP-para tags added to code
  • adding a new hyperlink is painful, resorted to copying and pasting existing code
  • could not bold hyperlink as text format bar hidden behind edit url field
  • can't customise hyperlink text within Add Hyperlink box when adding a new link
  • can only change publish status using quick edit via All Pages
  • can't add info to image ie Title description and Alt text
  • when adding an image block, only 12 images of my media library display
  • preview of edited published webpage does not reflect changes until page is updated (I need to see what the page looks like before publishing changes)

I really don't like v 5.0. The PC and moblie versions are cumbersome to use. Too much scrolling and first time users don't find it intuitive to use. Version was so much better!!

Hello @lccwgtn , welcome to Core Trac and thanks for opening this ticket.

I've tested the issues you describe above. Majority of them have been solved in others Gutenberg and WordPress releases.

Here's a summary of my results.

Tested on WordPress 5.4.2 with Twenty Seventeen theme. Android 8.1.0 with Chrome 84.0.4147.89

  • Now the edit tool bar is at the top of the block on which there is the focus. Linking, adding bold or italic to text can be done easily.
  • Still no undo buttons, but I guess this is a design decision.
  • Code blocks can be added and display correctly with no paragraph tags wrapping them.
  • It's still difficult to add hyperlinks. When the metabox to add the link opens, only one part is displayed in the screen view. The other part is not visible. And since the part of the metabox to validate the entered link is not visible, you have to do the validation with the phone keyboard. And a click & hold on the metabox makes it move weirdly, making the whole process not very easy.
  • Hyperlinks can be bolded correctly since the tool bar shows correctly.
  • The post status options available on Desktop are all in mobile view.
  • The image infos options available on Desktop are all in mobile view.
  • All medias gallery images can be accessed when adding an image block.
  • Preview correctly reflects the changes done in the editor.

So the single issue still remaining is the hyperlink stuff. Now reported upstream here

I did some testing on Android 6.0.1 and also on iOS 13.3 and have filed a few more related issues in Gutenberg repo:
