    11OK, there is a precedent for checking empty `alt` and then assigning an empty string in the [https://core.trac.wordpress.org/browser/trunk/src/wp-admin/includes/media.php?rev=52059&marks=1474-1478#L1474 get_attachment_fields_to_edit function]. So `get_post_meta` might return something other than either the user-defined text or an empty string (or, at least, there was a concern when adding that code in r12055).
