#4685 closed enhancement (fixed)

Better, faster, more streamlined install

Description

Behold, the fruit of my flight back from WordCamp:

Takes you to the install page if WP is not installed (and there is a wp-config.php) via redirect. Works via root URL and /wp-admin.*?$. Asks for all necessary information on the first page you see. It doesn't tell you technical stuff that doesn't matter. Fewer clicks, fewer screens (just two now!)

Next up is the wp-config.php-less install, but I'll open a seperate ticket for that.

(In [5844]) More streamlined install process. Obeys WP_SITEURL if defined. fixes #4687 (props JeremyVisser, Nazgul), see #4685

I didn't get any feedback, so I started the ball rolling.

I could especially use some feedback on the changed copy.

My goals for this were:

  • to keep the lighthearted spirit of the original
  • to not tell the user any technobabble that they won't care about
  • to get rid of the idea of "steps" (now there is the info gathering page and the "installed" page)
  • to reduce clicks
  • to better pickup the proper location of the install.php and auto-redirect to it
  • declutter, prettify

Looks good!
I'm still not particularly fond of :
"You may want to browse the <a href="%s">ReadMe documentation</a> at your leisure."
