#46930 closed feature request (maybelater)

Widget to switch blogs

Description

There should be some kind of explicit support for such things as:

  • switching between several related blogs (such as different language versions of a blog);
  • displaying links to language versions of blogs in such forms as national flags.

It should become available in all themes of a future version!

Hi @porton, welcome to WordPress Trac!

Thanks for you suggestion. Since there is no multilingual support in WordPress core yet, this sound like plugin territory for now.

@SergeyBiryukov I don't propose to add full multilingual support in WordPress core.

I propose just to add easy switching between several different (otherwise unrelated) blogs.

It is much easier to implement than full multilingual support.

In general this could be a useful feature but there are lots of nuances, for example determining which sites should or shouldn't be shown in the widget, which user roles should be allowed to place the widget (super admins or regular site admins), how to handle non-public sites, etc.

This is a great candidate for a feature that should be developed as a plugin first before being proposed for inclusion in core.

If someone wants to develop this and link to it here, this ticket can be reopened in due course.

The list of sites to be shown (and their icons and/or titles) should be just entered by a user just like a menu. By the way, it can be implemented as menu, if we add icons to menus as an additional feature (useful by itself).

Note: See TracTickets for help on using tickets.
