Import error from xml WP export file

Description
After an xml export from WP2.1.2, I tried to import into 2.3 and got this error message:
WordPress database error: [Table 'wordpress230.wp_categories' doesn't exist]
SELECT cat_name FROM wp_categories
Catchable fatal error: Object of class stdClass could not be converted to string in C:\wamp\www\wordpress230\wp-includes\taxonomy.php on line 647
