Description

Hello,

While testing the beta I found the sidebar contents functioned a little odd. On initial install the sidebars showing on the front-end match what was in Appearance > Widgets which is;
Footer #1 (Search, Recent Posts, Recent Comments) and in Footer #2 (Archives, Categories, Meta)
But navigating the Appearance > Customizer > Widgets showed the defaults as Footer #1 (About this site) and Footer #2 (Find Us) and once I published the Customizer I found the front-end showed these two and then now the Appearance > Widgets also showing these.

So it seems the default widget content from TwentyTwenty only loads into Customizer as a default and isn't the actual defaults found on install in Appearance > Widgets.

Thanks

Showing the default in Customizer is different

The starter content is optional, so it does not show on the front until you save it.

  • Component changed from Bundled Theme to Customize
  • Type changed from defect (bug) to enhancement
  • Version changed from trunk to 4.7

Thanks @poena I overlooked that for sure.

Seems that's the case that it's only loaded into the Customizer and only becomes live is saved. More can be found in the original make post;
https://make.wordpress.org/core/2016/11/30/starter-content-for-themes-in-4-7/

It might be nice to have some messaging surrounding that in the Customizer or the ability to load/disable the starter content when you load Customizer.

I guess this is less a Bundled Theme issue and has been around since 4.7. I was going to close but am going to leave for now as I feel it would be helpful to users to indicate they're looking at starter content and not live content when in that view.

Thanks for bringing up the issue @garrett-eclipse. Even though this did not turn out to be a Twenty Twenty issue, I just wanted reiterate that development is still being done on GitHub and issues need to be reported there, to avoid duplication of issues and work.

Thanks

It sounds like the current behavior is expected. Is the proposed action for this ticket to provide a user-facing explanation for starter content? If so, I think there's another ticket to address starter content issues that would cover this.
