WP 5.5 trashes customizations made to site

Description

We have been running 5.4.2 since it was released and built out an education site using Learnpress with Paid Memberships Pro. We had revised some of the code and behaviors of how the dashboards worked with students. Everything worked just fine until we upgraded to 5.5. Once we upgraded, the menus for the course were inert and did nothing, none of the courses would come up and allow access as before even though those settings were the same. We installed the site on another server using 5.4.2 and everything worked fine again...tried the 5.5 upgrade and the site was trashed. Not sure what would have changed as issues like this are very rare for us and haven't occurred for many years until now.

Running PHP 7.4.8
Running Astra Theme
Plugins: Learnpress, paid memberships pro, itheme security, sucuri security, ninja firewall, litespeed cache, woocommerce and additional learnpress plugins

Hi @wpa2020,

Welcome to Trac!

It's hard to tell from your description what "modifications" means, but any modifications made directly to WordPress Core, plugin, or theme files will be overwritten when they are updated with new versions. This is not the recommended way to make modifications to the behavior of WordPress.

If that is not the case, could you try installing and activating this plugin: https://wordpress.org/plugins/enable-jquery-migrate-helper/.

This will confirm that there is JavaScript on your site that needs to be updated to follow more modern jQuery practices. You can leave the plugin active for the time being, but the breaking code will need to be updated before the next step of the Upgrading jQuery in Core roadmap.

If the plugin does fix your issue, then please reach out to the plugins and themes that contain the old code directly.

Also, in the future, please use the WordPress.org support forums for requests like this instead.

By modifications I meant we added css code to the astra them under the customization section to directly affect how the learnpress dashboard looked and reacted when a student was going through the courses. We tend to never alter wordpress core code as I know it will be overwritten when a new update comes along.

I will try that plugin and see what happens and then let you know the results. Thank you for the quick reply!

I ran the plugin and got this message:

jQuery Migrate Helper — Warnings encountered
This page generated the following warnings:

https://www.mysite.com/wp-content/plugins/learnpress-students-list/assets/js/scripts.js: 'ready' event is deprecated
Please make sure you are using the latest version of all of your plugins, and your theme. If you are, you may want to ask the developers of the code mentioned in the warnings for an update.

We have the latest version of the plugin, so my guess is that it is up to Learnpress to get on the ball and update the plugin on their end. Thank you again!!!

Great! Thanks for confirming that for me to rule that out.

I'm glad that the plugin fixed your issue. I recommend opening up a support ticket in their forum. They may not even be aware of the issue yet! I'm closing as invalid, which is Trac's impolite way of saying "there is nothing that needs to be done here".

Note: See TracTickets for help on using tickets.
