Description (last modified by )
One of the best things about the Events Widget is that it encourages people to organize an event when there aren't any in their area.
Now that we're pinning global online WordCamps and Learn discussion groups, though, people never see that message.
Instead of displaying it when there are 0
events, we could display it when there are less than 2
or 3
.
That should lead to more local events being organized by the community. (Those would take place online during COVID, of course, but they'd still building local community.)

Love the idea! I'd show the message if there are less than 3 events.
Can you remind me, to which page we link to in that message? Because after the new Learn WordPress platform is fully launched, I'd like to see that page reflect the fact that virtually everyone can lead a discussion group (which is a bit different than organizing an event).
Of course, the change in core can't reflect that so much as we probably want to land with a text that keeps time.

That's a good idea. It points to https://make.wordpress.org/community/handbook/meetup-organizer/welcome/.

I like the idea!
I think the message should be composed in a way that it suggests that there may already be a community organizing events, and the person can join them to help. Because some people could have the impression that they will simple organize events on their own, or even create a "competing" event.

We probably should create a completely new page...
Could we use some "general" address like wordpress.org/organise-community-event in the Core so that we could change the location where it redirects if/when needed more easily?

That's a good point. What would be good way to say that?
I think one thing to balance with that will be how verbose the message is. The landing page talks about existing vs new groups, so we might be able to rely on that for the details.

That like a good idea. We do something similar for the "Meetups" link, which points to https://make.wordpress.org/community/meetups-landing-page, and then gets redirected to meetup.com/pro/wordpress.

Maybe something like:
Want more events? Join your local community
Or:
Want more events? Help organize the next one!

These messages are great. Short, sweet, to the point.
I really like the idea of having this notice available more often as suggested. I agree that it would be good to have the split messaging to help organize or join. We always remind our members that they are welcome to organize meetings and don't need to rely solely on us "the main organizers". To that end, I think it would be great if the dual messages could rotate so everyone, even current members, are reminded that they too can organize.

I really like that! It could make it less intimidating for folks, to know they don't have to do it all alone.

- Keywords has-patch added
When no events are available in the Events Widget, people have always been shown a message encouraging them to help organize one (see tmpl-community-events-no-upcoming-events
). Now that it's common for online WordCamps and Learn discussion groups to be pinned to the Events API, it's rare that there are no events in the widget, even if there are no _local_ events. Because of that, users are rarely encouraged to join their local community and help organize.
This commit adds an additional call-to-action message, which is shown when there are 1 or 2 events available.

PR #764 starts to implement this.
We'll still need to create the page mentioned in comment:6.
I'll work to create that page this week.
Can we change the URL in Core to some general and just do redirect to wanted page, in case that is to change at some point or if we don't get the new page published before 5.7?

Yup, definitely. For the "Meetups" link in the widget, we use https://make.wordpress.org/community/meetups-landing-page.
My first thought for this would be something like: https://make.wordpress.org/community/organize-event-landing-page
I like that that puts it under the Community Team, and that it makes it clear that it's landing page. That may help avoid conflicts with real pages in the future, but it's mostly subjective. I'm open to other ideas.

5.7-beta1
is on Tuesday, so we'll need to commit it by then unless we want to bump to 5.8.
Since we'll be using a redirect anyway, we could launch this in 5.7 w/ the link redirecting to https://make.wordpress.org/community/handbook/meetup-organizer/. Then, whenever the new landing page is ready, we could update the redirect (on the w.org side) to point there.
How does that sound @sippis ?
