Description

The “Twenty …” themes display a footer that reads “Proudly powered by WordPress.”

People often prefer to hide this footer. I can't speak for everyone, but I want to hide it, and I'd like to discuss why.

When text appears on a website, it’s speaking for the site owner. Just as it would be improper for a theme to display a copyright notice claiming copyright of the site’s contents for the theme developers, I feel it’s inappropriate to claim the website owner is proud to use WordPress.

The developers of WordPress have plenty to be proud about — it’s fine software. But as a WordPress user, I’m not proud to be using it. I just chose the best tool for the job.

I believe fewer people would object to a notice reading simply, “Powered by WordPress” — which is at least accurate — as opposed to one that makes a false claim about how they feel about it.

I'm not sure this is something that needs changing, in my mind the theme is proud to be powered by WordPress, which makes sense for a default theme created by WordPress to be.

Pride and other emotions can only be experienced by sentient beings. Are you suggesting that the 20 something themes have achieved sentience?
