Description
The “Twenty …” themes display a footer that reads “Proudly powered by WordPress.”
People often prefer to hide this footer. I can't speak for everyone, but I want to hide it, and I'd like to discuss why.
When text appears on a website, it’s speaking for the site owner. Just as it would be improper for a theme to display a copyright notice claiming copyright of the site’s contents for the theme developers, I feel it’s inappropriate to claim the website owner is proud to use WordPress.
The developers of WordPress have plenty to be proud about — it’s fine software. But as a WordPress user, I’m not proud to be using it. I just chose the best tool for the job.
I believe fewer people would object to a notice reading simply, “Powered by WordPress” — which is at least accurate — as opposed to one that makes a false claim about how they feel about it.

I'm not sure this is something that needs changing, in my mind the theme is proud to be powered by WordPress, which makes sense for a default theme created by WordPress to be.

Pride and other emotions can only be experienced by sentient beings. Are you suggesting that the 20 something themes have achieved sentience?

As a 38-year-old, I think 20-somethings can have a mind of their own sometimes ;)
Seriously, though, I don't like the idea of automatically changing that text in activated themes. Maybe Twenty Twenty-One and/or Twenty Nineteen could have both text strings, and the preference could be defined (as the text without "proudly") on an activation hook.
I do prefer changing the credit for future bundled themes:
- Twenty Twenty already has "Powered by WordPress" instead.
- While the meaning and purpose may have changed since 2007, the comment within the once-default Kubrick theme clearly notes that displaying "[This blog] is proudly powered by WordPress" was a way to support and promote WordPress.
- None of the six options for WordPress.com sites include "proudly" and it can make more sense there than on many
.orgsites.
#42644 proposes a method to choose footer credits in the Customizer, similar to the dropdown for WordPress.com sites.
Anyway, I agree this is a duplicate of #3931.
Likely, a duplicate for #3931
