Description (last modified by peterwilsoncc)

With WordPress 5.7 the default when Add media insert image always defaults to Medium 300px wide.
Why does WordPress 5.7 not remember the preferred default or last used?
Every time I upload an image I have to remember to check & change this setting.
It was never a problem before 5.7

Could you clarify which editor you are using and what WP version you upgraded from?
I have seen several complaints that the block editor does not remember your last size choice, like the classic editor does.
I just tested with block editor in 5.7 and it uses the large image size. In my test, the classic editor in 5.7 still remembers the last size used.

I'm using Classic WP Text Editor (not Visual editor, not block editor)
Whether I upload new media or import existing media, default is always 300px wide

Not sure how I find out what previous WP version was sorry,
but it was up to date/most recent before 5.7 was released

I'll change medium size settings to my themes preferred large size, as a workaround that should solve my issue. I dont ever want thumbnails or small images...

That 300px medium preference seems to remain with images already uploaded. I have changed all Media sizes to eg 740px wide, and if I upload a new image it defaults to Medium 740px wide, but if I try to insert any older images, they default to the Medium 300px wide, like it is metadata associated with the image when uploaded?

@subbasshead

I'm having trouble reproducing this on an install running the classic editor plugin and using the Twenty Twenty One default theme.

This is what I have tried:

  • Create new post
  • Switch to classic editor, text mode
  • Add media, change to large and insert
  • Create new post
  • Switch to classic editor, text mode
  • Add media, default size shown is large, change to medium

I repeated the above a few times, each time switching to a different image size and for the next post the default size was showing the previously used version.

Please let me know if I've missed a step or you're able to reproduce the error without plugins.

@subbasshead this may have been fixed by a recent change, can you re-test to see if this is still an issue for you?

If so, can you describe the exact steps to reproduce and/or include a screencast of the issue?
