Description

When clicking on widget, I only get the large extended set of options (one normally only gets the URL or shortcode field). Also, when clicking on "update", it says "saving" but never returns.

The update fails to happen when editing other widgets as well.

I only get the large extended set of options (one normally only gets the URL or shortcode field).

I don't really follow this part, would you mind elaborating on this? Did you expect to see just a single form field labeled URL or shortcode there? If not, would you please walk me step by step through your thinking there?

Also, when clicking on "update", it says "saving" but never returns.

This seems to be a bug – good catch! I see you have a lot of plugins installed so there's a possibility that it's not a core bug but some sort of interaction with one of these plugins. Would you mind disabling all of them to see if it helps?

If it does – please enable them back one by one and take note when the problem returns, it will tell us exactly which plugin is at fault here.

If it doesn't – that's clearly a core bug.

Also, unrelated to all of that – please open your browser's dev tools before that problem occurs, then try to save, and see if there are any errors in there (red). If you'll see any, copy them over here – it will help us debug.

@zieladam thanks for your response and for your support.

Keeping in mind that this is a live site, I did disable all widgets save Iskamet and TablePress (an I can't imagine them having anything to do with this). The saving problem remains.

What you see above, by the way, is the full configuration of the widget. Previously, you had to click on something like "advanced" to see all of that (and I almost never touch that stuff, nor should most people).

I've been testing the reported issue and wasn't able to reproduce the problem with not being able to save the widgets.

Testing environment

Chrome browser
PHP 7.4
WordPress: started with 5.7.2 and upgraded to 5.8
Widget Responsive for Youtube plugin
TwentyTwenty One theme

Testing Steps

On WP 5.7 added the responsive YouTube widget
Updated to 5.8
The widget display in the section is broken
Made some changes and saved the widget, it was updated correctly
Added the new responsive YouTube widget, it was broken too (which means the broken widget is a problem with the external plugin, and should be addressed there)

Testing Results
Unable to reproduce, the broken layout is related to external plugin

@pigdog234 It looks like some of the errors are caused by extensions "Blocked By Extension". Can you check in incognito mode or disable all extensions and paste the errors once again?

It's not the problem. The log I showed you was from Firefox, but I ran into the exact same issue with Chrome (and I have no extensions installed with Chrome). This looks like something on the back end. What sort of instrumentation can I turn on in WP to follow along in logs?

Howdy @pigdog234 looking at the Youtube Widget Responsive plugin's widget form I noticed that the options in the form are handled by a global jQuery ready event. The plugin should use the documented widget-added event to hook event handlers for the form. Otherwise some functions, such as the buttons to assign a preview image from the media library, will not work.

In my testing, on stock 5.8 with only the Youtube Widget Responsive plugin I could not reproduce the problem with saving.

Add each widget (see list above) to the Sidebar area
- For Youtube widget responsive, set the following fields:

- For the playlist:
  - Add a Text widget
  - Click on YouTube button, which opens the wizard

Youtube widget responsive form rendering is different from 5.7.2 to 5.8, where in 5.7.2 tabbed panels are used (UI rendering difference needs to be addressed with the plugin author)
Unsure of how the reporter has the YouTube Free settings configured - would need for further investigation as reporter's configuration settings may or may not be contributing to the reported problem (there are privacy settings in the plugin)

I too was unable to reproduce the saving/updating problem you are experiencing.

I'm not sure how you have the YouTube Free settings configured. Looking through these settings, there are a few for privacy, legacy scripts, Ajax, etc. which may or may be contributing to the problems you're experiencing.
The errors you shared do show scripts being blocked whether by privacy settings in something in your site (possibly by Embed Plus for YouTube - Gallery, Channel, Playlist, Live Stream or some other plugin or script) and/or by something in your browser (setting or add-on).
Youtube widget responsive form layout did change from WordPress 5.7.2 to 5.8 as you showed.

The update/save problem seems to be due to something blocking the scripts as noted above rather than due to WordPress Core.

Sorry for the delayed response. It seems as though this needs to be routed to the plugin for further consideration. What I propose to do is to let them know about this ticket and then see what they have to say. FWIW I am still seeing the problem. Just to be clear, there is a workaround. Getting there from https://HOSTNAME/blog/wp-admin/customize.php?url=https%3A%2F%2FHOSTNAME%2F works just fine, while the edit fails from https://HOSTNAME/blog/wp-admin/widgets.php.
