Gallery issues with 5.9

Description

I'm finding gallery issues with WP 5.9.
In trying to create a new gallery, I notice two problems:
(1) I cannot change the order of the images.
(2) The images show up at an enormous size and stacked, even when I chose a Masonry-style Gallery (which would normally show thumbnails).
I am a visual artist, and so the appearance of the gallery is vital for me.

I am on Mac OS Mojave 10.14.6. Browser is Chrome.

People are saying to roll back to the previous WP version, in discussing the inability to change the order of the images. So I know that this bug is already known. But I'm reporting this because I see little discussion of the inability to change the appearance of the gallery to the Masonry-style option.

To add to the above:

my website is:
https://www.jeanarnold.com/

The only gallery to which this applies was just created last night. All the other galleries were created before 5.9.
The new gallery with the problem is:
https://www.jeanarnold.com/malden/

For comparison, here is one of the previous galleries (with things working properly):
https://www.jeanarnold.com/paintings-2009-10/
With the Masonry view, showing the thumbnails:

I am using Dorsey theme from Made By Minimal company.

The way to create this problem is to just simply try to create a gallery: first, finding that the order of the images cannot be changed, and second, to find that choosing Masonry has no effect.

Thank you,
Jean

Hi @jmwarnold, welcome, thanks for taking the time to report this.

The issue with the masonry gallery style will be because the Dorsey theme has not been updated to support the new Gallery block format in 5.9. The theme authors were notified about the changes that would be needed prior to 5.9 being released here https://make.wordpress.org/core/2021/08/20/gallery-block-refactor-dev-note/.

The best option to get this resolved would be to report this to Minimal and ask them if they have an update available to fix this.

The issue with sorting the images in the media library dialog will be fixed in 5.9.1, in the meantime, you should be able to reorder the images once the Gallery is inserted in the post:

Thank you for letting me know, glendaviesnz, that the Dorsey theme needs to be updated. I see that the date on that Developer Note that warned this was coming was in August. I emailed Made by Minimal at the same time that I did the bug report. They responded:

"I can confirm that WordPress 5.9 has broken the theme's native gallery display. We're working on a fix and plan to release a theme update within a few weeks."

I'm not a part of the developer world -- would the Developer Notes be something that these theme companies should keep up with? I would think that it would be to their advantage to stay on top of things so that the themes they offer continue to work right.

Yes, one of the intentions of the Developer Notes is to alert plugin and theme developers to any breaking changes that are in the pipeline for upcoming WordPress releases. The aim is to try and keep those sort of changes to a minimum, but where they do need to happen the Dev Notes are designed to hopefully give plugin and theme developers plenty of warning so they can update their products ahead of the release.
