I didn't like the "links" sidebar widget because it treats all bookmark categories the same, and I wanted to be able to turn "show descriptions" and "sort by date" on and off individually for separate categories. So I wrote this crude "bookmarks" widget (patch against v2.3.1 attached) that displays a single bookmark category with its own display options. You can see it in use at my blog, ​gee bobg. I hereby contribute it to the public domain. I hope you'll find it useful, and feel free to incorporate any or all of the code into future versions of Wordpress.
